What is Gossypol?
Gossypol acetate is a male contraceptive. There are other health benefits, such as the treatment of gynecological diseases.
Gossypol is an active ingredient extracted from the mature seeds or root bark of the Malvaceae plant upland cotton or other plants of the same genus, GAA is widely used in the medical field. Oral gossypol has been successfully used for male contraception for many years, and has anti-tumor, anti-viral, anti-parasitic and other activities.
With the change of crystallization conditions, gossypol is needle-like, flake-like, and rod-like multi-morphic crystals, with luster, odorless, and tasteless. It is easy to deteriorate when exposed to light and heat. It has a high solubility in other solvents, soluble in 50-200g per liter, slightly soluble in petroleum ether, insoluble in water, and becomes rose red when reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid, and dark green when reacted with 1% ferric chloride solution. There is an electrostatic reaction to friction with insulating materials. Its melting point varies with the last refined crystallization conditions, but generally the melting point is around 174-176°C.

There are gossypol glands accounting for 1.5-2.7% of kernel weight in cotton kernels, and its color is from light yellow to cherry red. It is the most dense part of gossypol in cottonseed, and gossypol accounts for about 35-50% of the gland weight.
