Icariin Powder is a widely studied active ingredient in the Epimedium plant and belongs to the class of flavonoids. It is one of the most representative compounds in Epimedium extract and one of the important components of Epimedium widely used in the health care field.

Epimedoside is found in high levels in the Epimedium plant and has a variety of potential physiological activities and pharmacological effects that can enhance sexual function, have strong antioxidant activity, and help maintain bone health.

In order to study the preservation effect of different concentrations of Icariin Powder on pig semen in a low temperature (4°C) environment, the semen of 4 Landrace boars was collected in the experiment, and the semen that passed the test was mixed and divided into control group and 5,10, 15, 20, and 25 mg/L icariin groups, a total of 6 groups, respectively added with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mg/L icariin, and were stored in a low-temperature environment. On the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th day, pig sperm motility, sperm motility, path speed, linear speed, and sperm abnormality rate indicators were detected to screen the optimal icariin concentration for pig semen cryopreservation.

The results showed that in each test group adding icariin could improve the quality of pig sperm during the storage period, and the sperm viability rate, sperm motility, path speed, and linear speed of the 15 mg/L icariin group were all significantly improved during the storage period. Higher or higher than other groups (P<0.05 or P>0.05), and the sperm abnormality rates were significantly lower or lower than other groups (P<0.05 or P>0.05). It shows that under the conditions of this test, the optimal addition amount of icariin in the diluent used for cryopreservation of pig semen is 15 mg/L.
